Cathedral colors

The dominant blues and reds weren’t random. Blue symbolized heaven and divine truth, red symbolized Christ’s sacrifice and royal power. The contrast created what medieval theologians called lux nova — “new light,” a foretaste of paradise.

The structure of Saint Chapelle was conceived not as a grand church first, but as a giant reliquary to enshrine the Passion relics (Crown of Thorns, fragment of the True Cross, etc.).

At Saint Chapelle, there are no solid walls in the upper chapel. The stained glass windows cover almost the entire surface. The transparent quality is such that the stone walls seem to vanish. Saint Chapelle was completed in just seven years during the medieval ages. Yet no artist today could replicate its grace!

The Sainte-Chapelle is King’s Royal Chapel in the medieval Palais de la Cité, the residence of the Kings of France until the 14th century, on the Île de la Cité in the River Seine in Paris, France.🇫🇷
